Who dares wins: a Costa del Sol home that will always feel special

Some homes create an immediate reaction. When I first saw this one, my feeling was simply that this was something special. It was different, and it looked like a home that its eventual owners would really enjoy living in.

Finca Cortesin Villa, frontline golf with neighbour

At €6.5 million, this contemporary villa at Finca Cortesin in Casares is not inexpensive. However, curves are generally more complicated and more expensive to build than straight lines. The architects, Vicens and Ramos, have dared to move away from the square forms that have become so familiar in contemporary architecture, and the result has a very different character.

The aerial view tells much of the story. There is nothing jarring about the design. The curves of the house flow into the terraces, gardens and egg-shaped swimming pool, allowing your eye to move naturally around the whole property. Seen beside the more rectangular contemporary homes nearby, the difference becomes even clearer. There is nothing wrong with those houses, but this one has a form and movement of its own.

Research suggests that people often respond more positively to curved spaces than to those dominated by straight lines. That is easy to understand when you think about a kitchen island with rounded ends or a dining table with softened corners. They often feel more harmonious and welcoming than a square block placed in the middle of a room. This villa applies that same idea on an architectural scale.

The setting adds to the feeling. The four-bedroom home stands frontline to the golf course, with views across the golf course, surrounding countryside and mountains, while the beaches of Casares are only a short drive away. Yet it is the architecture that makes the property memorable.

If somebody asked us for a Costa del Sol villa that felt completely different from their home elsewhere, somewhere they could come to relax and feel special, this is one that would immediately come to mind. You may get what you pay for in terms of construction and design, but what the eventual owners will really be buying is how the home makes them feel.
