Marking Día de Andalucía and the 1980 referendum that granted regional autonomy, and reflecting on the cultural heritage and identity that shape life here on the Costa del Sol today.

Día de Andalucía, 28 February
Today Andalucía celebrates the anniversary of the 1980 referendum that granted the region its autonomy. It was a defining moment that allowed Andalucía to take responsibility for its own institutions and direction within Spain.
Since then, 28 February has become a day of pride in language, culture and identity. The green and white flag is raised on balconies and in town halls. Schools mark the occasion. In many places there is music, local food and a strong sense of community.
Andalucía is not one thing. It is coastline and countryside, historic cities and small white villages, tradition and modern life side by side. It has its own rhythm and personality, which those of us who live here come to appreciate more each year.
For those of us who live and work here, Día de Andalucía is a reminder of the region’s cultural heritage and the importance of people feeling that they belong. It is about feeling at home in a place that has its own identity and history.
Happy Día de Andalucía to everyone celebrating today.
