Marbella Then and Now – A Personal Reflection

A personal look at Marbella’s evolution — from fishing village to lifestyle icon — and why it still feels like home after all these years.

A view from Marbella’s harbour wall looking inland towards La Concha mountain — a place of quiet reflection and a timeless symbol of home.

"I wonder how many have thought, "one day this will be home"

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been busy giving our website a fresh look — not just in design, but in how we talk about the areas we know best. One of the pages we’ve just finished updating is the one about Marbella itself.

Writing it reminded me just how much this town has changed over the years — and at the same time, how much of its essence has stayed the same. Today, Marbella is known the world over as the symbol of the designer lifestyle in southern Spain. A place of glamour, international flavour, fine dining, and modern convenience. But underneath all that, there’s still the heart of what it once was: a fishing village with a rhythm of life all its own.

I still remember visiting Marbella over 40 years ago, before I ever imagined living here full time. There was a Citroën Traction Avant always parked outside the Café de Paris by the Hotel Lima. The pavements hadn’t all been paved yet, but Orange Square and the Old Town already had that same quiet charm — and looked much as they still do today.

Before flying back to the UK, I had a little ritual. I’d walk out along the harbour wall, take a moment to look up at La Concha mountain, and think: one day, this will be home. And of course, it has been. For nearly 30 years now.

So yes, Marbella has evolved. It’s grown, it’s polished up in places, and it’s become a name recognised far beyond Spain. But for those of us who’ve watched it over the years — and still walk those same streets every day — it’s more than a label. It’s a place with layers, stories, and a life that still draws people in.

If you’re curious to see how we’ve captured all of that in the updated area page, you can read it here:
